Do I really love him - or am I just attached?
How to distinguish love from chemistry, familiarity, fear, and emotional dependence
The short answer
Love and attachment can exist together, but they are not identical. Attachment may be driven by familiarity, access, chemistry, history, loneliness, or fear of loss. Healthy love also includes truth, care, respect, patience, responsibility, and consistent action.
A CORE DADDY ISSUES LESSON
Learning the Standard of LOVE
LOVE is not proven by intensity, chemistry, promises, potential, or pain.
LOVE is recognized by character, truth, and consistent conduct.
Missing someone does not automatically mean the relationship is good for you. Feeling unable to imagine life without him does not prove you are meant to remain. Strong emotion tells you that a bond exists. It does not, by itself, tell you whether the bond is healthy.
Love should be evaluated by more than intensity.
- Does the relationship allow both people to tell the truth?
- Is care mutual?
- Are boundaries respected?
- Can conflict happen without contempt, fear, or manipulation?
- Does the relationship support who you are becoming - or require you to disappear to preserve it?
Attachment often asks, "How will I survive losing this?" Love can ask the harder question: "What is true and good for both of us?" Sometimes love participates in repair. Sometimes love releases what cannot become healthy.
You do not need to deny your feelings to examine them. Mature love makes room for both tenderness and truth.
Questions to sit with
- What evidence of love exists beyond how strongly I feel?
- Do I feel free to be honest - or afraid of losing access?
- If fear disappeared, what truth about this relationship would remain?
Faith Perspective
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes love through character and conduct - not intensity alone. 1 John 4:7 identifies God as the source of love, while 1 John 3:18 reminds us that love is demonstrated through actions and truth, not merely words. To recognize true love, we must first learn its standard from God - and then examine both what we receive and what we embody against that standard.
